Financial storms are nothing new. For hundreds of years, there have been recessions and depressions throughout the world. From 1901 until 2009, there have been 23 depressions, recessions, negative events, and/or market turmoil in the United States. During this same time, there were 28 hurricanes:

While on the surface, Recessions and Hurricanes (Ocean Storms) are quite different. However, there are uncanny similarlities between both of types of storms. A stock market correction is measured in performance declines while hurricanes are measured in terms of categories or wave heights. Being prepared for a financial storm might not be so different from battening down the hatches for an ocean storm or hurricane.
