Commodity Growth: Gold, Silver, Platinum, Zinc, Copper, and Many Others

“The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) regulates commodities. In 1976, the entire futures market for oil and other commodities was approximately $4 billion. As of 2007, the market reached $4.78 trillion. Yet the total market (including the value of commodity derivatives traded off-exchange and outside CFTC regulation) has reached almost $10 trillion as of December 2007. The commodity space is large and includes gold, silver, platinum, zinc, copper, lead, nickel, soybeans, wheat, corn, cocoa, sugar, coffee, oil, natural gas, uranium, and many others on a variety of global exchanges. Despite the rogue wave that terrorized the financial markets in 2008, institutions will likely be committing additional funds to alternatives such as commodities. Numerous studies have shown that it is prudent to add commodities to a portfolio.”
